Founding Vision
Born from a need for proper wudu facilities, WuduMate began in 2008 after feedback from practising Muslims in UAE shaped the original concept.

From a visionary idea in Bahrain to global leadership in ablution design.

The Vision is Sparked
After witnessing the lack of appropriate wudu facilities in public spaces, engineer Charles Steel began designing a specialised wudu appliance. His idea set the foundation for what would become a global innovation in Islamic ablution solutions.
The Specialist Washing Company Ltd was incorporated in 2007. The first prototype product we developed was the WuduSeat, which we released with an industry standard mixer tap.

WuduMate Commercial
Despite launching during the global financial crisis, the company persevered, fuelled by a sense of purpose and user-driven design.
We attended Working Buildings ME in AbuDhabi, and Index in Dubai with our prototype, and received feedback that the concept was good, but the shape of the unit needed refining.
We launched the WuduMate Commercial focused on Commercial use. We installed our first units in the USA and in the GCC – 2 units in each location.

WuduMate Residential and purpose-designed taps
The WuduMate Residential was designed and released for home use.
Feedback from the WuduMate Commercial, was that the off-the-shelf tap we were using splashed water all over the user’s clothes, with such splashing invalidating the Wudu ritual.
This prompted us to design our own taps, firstly the WuduMate Pillar Tap Round, which had a spout directed vertically down, so water flow was unaffected by pressure, and later the Pillar Tap Square, which we still use.

Diversity Matters and WuduMate Mosque
Diversity Matters – “Best Practice Guide to Multi Faith Room Design”, was published for the first time. This booklet has now become the de facto standard for multi-faith room design.
The WuduMate Mosque was released, and the first units were installed over 3 floors at the Golden Mosque in Rochdale and at Markazul Uloom Al Islamiyya Rotherham.
We installed our first units in Australia, 10 x WuduMate Mosques to New South Wales University.

Growth and Innovation
By 2011 we had fitted 150 sites in the UK, and we also had orders from South Africa, Germany, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Australia and the USA. We also established distributors in Oman and Qatar.
In 2014 the WuduMate Commercial was superseded by the WuduMate Classic for commercial, mosque and home use. Later that year, the WuduMate Residential was superseded by the WuduMate Compact for home, commercial and mosque use.
In 2018 The WuduMate Mosque was superseded by the WuduMate Modular for mosque, commercial and even home use.

WuduMate Mobile and Commitment to Ongoing Quality imporovements
In 2020 we designed and launched the innovative WuduMate Mobile, the first portable wudu device in the world, that can be used in places with no plumbing.
Following requests from our regular customers, we also added the WuduMate WuduBasin to our range.
In 2024 we received ISO 9001 certification, renewed in 2025, confirming that we and all of our suppliers, are operating the highest quality standards and we continue to innovate and strive to improve.
In 2025 we have begun a process of changing all our taps to lead-free versions, which will continue over the next year.
